What does annotation look like?

Teaching Digital Annotation is a collaboration between two literacy educators who are committed to helping students become critical readers and writers in a both/and world. Literacy is both print AND digital, and we do not assume that one mode is better than another. Rather, we believe that students need to be taught to engage with both print and digital texts and that skills in one mode do not necessarily transfer to another.  To this end, we have implemented instruction in digital annotation in an effort to develop high school students’ ability to read digital texts deeply. As researchers and reflective practitioners, we feel it is important to hear from the students themselves about their knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to digital and print annotation.  This site showcases both the instructional moves made, as well as the annotations and reflections of the students.
